Dietetics FAQ

What’s the difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

A Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) is a regulated healthcare professional who has completed accredited university training, supervised clinical practice, and national licensing exams. Dietitians are legally allowed to provide medical nutrition therapy for conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gut disorders, and weight management.
A Nutritionist is not necessarily regulated, and training can vary widely. Some are highly qualified, while others may have minimal education.
If you’re seeking nutrition support for health conditions, working with a Registered Dietitian is recommended.

Will I get a Meal Plan?

You can receive a meal plan, but the goal of nutrition counselling isn’t to hand you a rigid template. At ASCEND, our Dietitians work with your lifestyle, preferences, culture, schedule, and health needs to develop an eating framework that is sustainable. Instead of strict rules, you’ll learn how to confidently choose meals and portions in everyday situations—at home, restaurants, and social events.

How long does it take to see results?

Most people start noticing meaningful changes within 3–6 weeks, depending on the goal. For weight management, digestion, energy levels, and metabolic conditions, progress is most successful when changes are gradual and sustainable rather than extreme. Nutrition is a long-term health strategy, not a quick fix, and follow-up sessions help keep progress consistent.

Do I need a referral to see a Dietitian?

No referral is required. You can book directly with a Dietitian. However, some extended health insurance plans may require a Physician’s note for insurance reimbursement, so it’s helpful to check your benefits coverage. We provide receipts for all services rendered that can be submitted directly to your provider.
